Are You Helping Yourself While You're Helping Your Clients? By: Luz N. Adams, RN, BSN, MS, CMC (en Espanol)
How many Job titles do you carry? As a coach you have obligations, your
clients, your business, marketing, advertising, and much more. As a
person you have your obligations to your family, your church, your
friends and Yourself. Which is most important to you? How can you help
others if you can't help yourself? Do you need a coach yourself? Can you be your own coach?
Let's see... Let's say, you are a new coach and you're just starting your business. You spend hours on the phone with your clients, you spend time advertising your business, you spend time creating and promoting classes, workshops, marketing and avenues of income. 24 hours a day, how many hours you spend working? Imagine you have to go work for someone. A typical day could be 8 hours of sleeping, 1 hour getting ready for work, 1 hour of traffic to get to work, 8-10 hours at work, 1 hour in traffic to get home, and you usually do 4-5 hours worth of chores when you get home. As an employee you usually work Monday through Friday, and you give 2-4 weeks of vacation each year. Do You work Saturday and Sunday? Break down a week of personal duties such as: cleaning the house, washing clothes, taking your kids to their sporting events, classes yoga and ballet, you go to church and you do the samething again next week. Imagine that your business is just as busy... Where you find the time for you? If you do not get to sleep 8 hours a night you do not give your body time to recover. You most likely will work more than 8-9 hours, and sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays, especially if you own your own business. You rarely find time to eat and when you do it is usually fast food. You do not drink nearly enough water, and you drink caffeine to stay alert. As a coach, what would you do and say to your client? Ask yourself these questions... What are my priorities? How should I advise my client? Where I can find time for me? What things do I like to do? How much time a day do I dedicate to caring for myself? How important am I? How often do I get to take a vacation? Where do I go on vacation? How much time a day do I dedicate to myself without feeling guilty? How much water do I drink daily? How much coffee or soda do I drink daily? How many times a day do I get up and stretch? How many days a week do I eat fast food? How many days a week, DO I eat fresh fruits and vegetables? How much time do I spend a day praying or meditating? How many times (a year because you're too busy) do I admire who I am and understand myself, my body and realize all of my accomplishments? How many times do I count my blessings? You are your own client, all the answers to the questions are within you. Luz N.
